The canes take on a deeper yellow colour as the plant matures and hold dark green, lance-shaped evergreen leaves. A great choice for screening which looks particularly effective alongside the Phyllostachys nigra (black bamboo).

The leathery leaves are dark purple-green in colour and are held on attractive purple-red stems. Come autumn the foliage turns to golden orange and crisp purple colours, which adds further interest before the leaves fall. This fast-growing tree is highly recommended for architectural planting, or as a windbreak, as it will soon become a strong and sturdy specimen; you can however prune it annually to keep it smaller.
