The purple birch is an attractive and unusual tree. The spring foliage is red-purple, darkening to deep purple in summer. At close quarters it looks pretty with its delicate, conical jagged leaves and slender outreaching branches, just slightly pendulous. A very useful tree planted near lightly coloured buildings.
