Prunus - Almond Trees
Ornamental Almond Trees are a wonderful variety of deciduous trees. They have the double benefit of providing you with a lovely show of flowers and producing a fantastic crop of almonds too. The almonds are borne in unusual casings of peach like velvety fruits which open up to reveal the sweet almonds inside.
This genus is from the Rosaceae family and this family originated in the Arabian peninsula, but is now widely cultivated globally. The almond fruits are often cultivated for their oil which can be extracted and is used industrially to detoxify food.
More information on the oil extraction process and on the history of this genus can be found here on the Encyclopedia of Life information page.
For the common gardener however, this great genus offers a beautiful ornamental garden tree that has the added bonus of producing an unusual crop every year.
