Blackcurrant Plants
Blackcurrants are a versatile fruit that can be used to produce jam or jellies as well as being used fresh in desserts. The blackcurrant plant is relatively simple to successfully grow. At planting time the blackcurrant plant must be planted deeply with the root/shoot union well below ground level, old wood should be then cut out in the winter. Blackcurrant plants should have a height and spread of around 5ft and produce fruit in their second year. Soils high in nitrogen and with plenty of humus are ideal for the blackcurrant plant, providing shelter from easterly winds is also helpful.
