Plum trees, members of the Prunus genus, hold a cherished place in orchards and gardens alike, prized for their delectable fruits, showy spring blossoms, and graceful forms that add a touch of elegance to the landscape.
Originating in various regions of the Northern Hemisphere, plum trees have been cultivated for centuries, their fruits enjoyed fresh, dried into prunes, or transformed into jams, jellies, and other culinary delights. From the classic European plums with their sweet, juicy flesh to the tart and tangy varieties favoured in Asian cuisine, plums offer a diverse range of flavours and textures to tantalise the taste buds.
But plum trees offer more than just culinary rewards. In early spring, before their leaves emerge, they erupt in a profusion of delicate blossoms, typically in shades of white, pink, or pale purple, creating a breathtaking display that heralds the arrival of warmer days. These blossoms, often fragrant and beloved by pollinators, transform orchards and gardens into ethereal clouds of colour.
Beyond their spring splendour, plum trees possess a graceful form that adds structure and elegance to the landscape throughout the year. Their branches, often spreading or slightly weeping, create a pleasing silhouette, while their foliage, typically oval-shaped and ranging in colour from deep green to reddish-purple, provides a lush backdrop for other plantings.
Plums are a popular choice for planting as they produce a reliable crop of tasty fruits that have exceptional flavour. The fruits are loosely globe-shaped and have a stone at the centre: they have a range of flavours depending on the variety and have soft skin with juicy flesh on the inside. The skin can be dark blue, purple, black or even yellow and the flesh can be rich orange, yellow or near-translucent.
One of the main reasons plum trees are so popular in the UK is because they are easy to grow and can become reliable croppers from a fairly young age. The earlier varieties are ready in July and the later ones are ready in September: you can test the ripeness by squeezing a plum between your thumb and finger – if it feels soft then the fruits are ready. Plums should easily come off the tree with a twist of the fruit.
Whether you're seeking a bountiful fruit tree to grace your orchard, a showy ornamental to enhance your garden's spring display, or simply a graceful tree to provide shade and beauty, plum trees offer a rewarding and versatile choice.
