Gooseberries are prickly little shrubs that hold wonderful globe-shaped fruits. They are a real treat for fruit lovers as they are one of the earliest fruiting plants of the year. The spherical fruits will be ready for picking in July; if you want to utilise them in cooking then pick them in June when they are not quite ripe, if not then leave them to ripen fully until early July. In order to stop the birds from pinching your crop, cover the ripening fruits in fine netting.
Gooseberries can be planted in almost all soil types and they grow to form a nice bush – you can even plant them in a large container. In order to get the best fruits, plant your gooseberries in a sunny position.
