Ornamental Trees

Ornamental trees are a wide-ranging and highly diverse collection of trees, and they are broadly defined as trees that do not have the primary purpose of bearing fruit. In fact, ornamental trees are so wide-ranging that the exact number of species is not known, but it is estimated that there are over 100,000 different species of non-fruiting trees.

In fact, there are so many different types of trees that the total number of trees collectively accounts for around a quarter of all plant species. It is thought that trees have existed on the earth for around 370 million years, and that over time they evolved to get their distinctively long trunk to compete for sunlight.

Trees have also been a pivotal factor in the survival of humans; not only from their ability to filter our air, but also for their other uses, like for burning for fire wood or for making hunting tools out of. For the average gardener today however, trees are often planted for much more aesthetic reasons.

Here, you'll find a wide selection of ornamental trees for sale.

Prunus Kanzan - Flowers

Prunus Kanzan

Flowering Cherry Tree

Prunus 'Kanzan' is a truly beautiful flowering cherry tree, which offers an array of interest throughout the year. In spring, bronzed leaves emerge and the iridescent sheen of the leaves glimmers in the early spring sunshine. Alongside the bronzed leaves, crimson flower buds appear: as the flowers open, they reveal deep pink, double flowers. The flowers appear in abundance and hang from their long stalks pendulously. By summer, the leaves have matured to a rich green colour and they later turn to autumnal orange shades, before falling. The tree itself is vase-shaped when young, but it later matures to have a spreading habit. The 'Kanzan' is deservedly one of the most popular Japanese flowering cherry trees: its versatility and size allow it to be planted in a range of situations. Japanese cherry trees thrive in a sunny spot and they prefer moist, fertile and deep soil. Avoid shallow and chalky soil for the best results. You can plant the ‘Kanzan’ as an ornamental specimen and it works equally well as an avenue tree. This tree looks beautiful alongside the prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’, where the rich green leaves of the ‘Kanzan’ contrast beautifully with the deep purple leaves of the ‘Royal Burgundy’. The ‘Kanzan’ is a delightful tree, which will become a real feature of your garden. Prunus Royal Burgundy - Flowers

Prunus Royal Burgundy

Flowering Cherry Tree

The 'Royal Burgundy' features showy shell-pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the wine-red leaves. A great choice for autumn colour and an ideal candidate for the smaller garden. Prunus 'Royal Burgundy' is a slightly less vigorous, purple-leaved version of the extremely popular Prunus 'Kanzan'. In spring, as fresh foliage emerges, candyfloss-pink, double flowers burst to life and hang in pendant clusters all over the tree. The exuberant flowers are truly eye-catching and they will add a delightful splash of colour to any spring garden. Spring also sees the arrival of the deep and rich wine-red leaves, which contrast beautifully with the pale pink flowers. The leaves initially hold a bronzed tint, but they soon mature to the bold red colour and hold that colour throughout summer. The ovate leaves are slightly serrated at their edges and are fairly large in size, making this a real statement tree.  The foliage retains its vivid colour over summer, but it produces a final burst of life in autumn when the leaves turn to blistering shades of scarlet before falling. This tree makes the perfect ornamental lawn specimen and it eventually grows to have an upright-spreading habit, resembling a vase’s shape. Due to its fairly compact eventual size, this is ideal for a sunny spot in a small garden. The ‘Royal Burgundy’ works well alongside the ‘Kanzan’ as the two trees both feature the showy spring flowers, but their contrasting leaf colour really stands out. Acer Sun Valley - Foliage

Acer rubrum Sun Valley

Red Maple Tree

Common Name: Red mapleLatin Name: Acer rubrum 'Sun Valley'Soil: Medium to wet, well-drained soil. Slight preference for acid soil.Position: Full sun/partial shade. Flowering period/colour: March/redHardiness: Fully hardy in the severest European climates (to below -20°C).Height and spread in 20-50 years: 6m-10m/4.5m-7.5mSpecial features: Bright red autumn colour. Tolerates wet soil. Acer rubrum 'Sun Valley' is a fine, medium-sized maple tree that produces a blaze of red colour in autumn. No fruit is produced, which can be an advantage in areas where the usual winged maple fruit would spread around, and have to be cleared up. The species name ‘rubrum’ means red, and this tree does indeed produce a very striking show of red colour to brighten up any garden. The genus name ‘Acer’ indicates that this tree is a maple, and maple trees are well known as fine specimen trees. They have a leaf with a characteristic shape, as seen on the Canadian flag, and a statuestque figure. Acer rubrum 'Sun Valley' is a medium-sized variety, which is useful for locations of more restricted size. Acer rubrum 'Sun Valley' is a male tree resulting from a cross between Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset' and Acer rubrum 'Autum Flame'. It has a particulary symmetrical ovate crown. Average growth in good conditions takes it to 6.4m height in the first ten years, finally maturing to 10m.

Amelanchier Robin Hill - Flowers

Amelanchier Robin Hill

June Berry Tree

Amelanchier 'Robin Hill' features masses of white flowers in spring, copper-coloured young foliage, a strong show of autumn colour and small berries in June. The 'Robin Hill' is a highly desirable tree that offers an array of interest throughout the seasons. In spring, just as the foliage is starting to shoot out, an abundance of star-shaped flowers emerge. The flowers emerge pink and soon turn pure white, with vivid yellow stamens at their heart. The spring foliage is coppery red and it makes the perfect backdrop for the floral display. By summer, the finely serrated, ovate leaves have matured to a luscious green and, in late June, the berries appear. The glossy summer berries are small, purple and hang in clusters all over the tree; they make a fantastic natural bird feeder, but they are also fit for human consumption, too.  A final show of colour comes in autumn, when the leaves turn to firey shades of orange and red before falling. This tree is well-suited to a range of positions, including as a lawn specimen or as a border tree. The dense and upright habit of the 'Robin Hill' makes it perfect for smaller spaces. It can tolerate a range of conditions, including urban sites, and thrives in most soils. In terms of a planting partner, the wonderfully colourful Amelanchier 'Rainbow Pillar' works well. Equally, Prunus 'Snow Goose' is a great match as both trees have an upright structure and strong autumn colour. Acer Red Sunset - Autumn Foliage

Acer Red Sunset

Red Maple Tree

Common Name: Red rubrum 'Franksred'Latin Name: Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset'Soil: Medium to wet, well-drained soil. Slight preference for acid soil.Position: Full sun/partial shade.Flowering period/colour: March-April/ red Hardiness: Very hardy (even in severe winters)Eventual height/spread: 15m/ 10mSpecial features: A dramatic show of autumn leaf colour The 'Franksred', an American native, is one of the most desirable acer trees around and it truly deserves its name of 'red sunset' as it offers a plethora of red shades: its red stems, red flowers, red fruits, red-tinged new foliage and, of course, its stunning autumnal red leaves make for a sensational scarlet show. The 3 or 5 lobed leaves, which, once mature, are mid-green in colour, are finely serrated at their edges. New foliage has a red blush and in spring the leaves are accompanied by red flowers, which later become red fruits. The autumn colour is spectacular, with the leaves turning to blistering shades of red: the leaf colour is more prominent in more acidic soils.Eventually the 'Franksred' will grow to have a rounded-oval crown with densely-packed branches, making it a fantastic garden feature. This makes a wonderful specimen tree, but it also works well when planted alongside another strong specimen, like the Acer pseudoplatanus 'Leopoldii', as the habit of the two trees is similar, but the leaf colour is different and the two would contrast perfectly.
