Metasequoia glyptostroboides is a superb deciduous conifer, one of only a very small number of conifers that shed their leaves annually. They hold a wonderful conical shape and produce little competitive shade for smaller plants as they are tall and slim with sparse branches. The leaves are pretty and rather feathery looking and are composed of innumerable linear leaflets. The leaf colour is bright green until autumn when it fades to rich brown and gold autumnal tints. The trunk is coloured orange-brown which adds an interest in winter when the branches are bare.
