Robinia hispida
Rose Acacia Tree
Common Name: Rose Acacia TreeLatin Name: Robinia hispidaSoil: Best in moist, well drained fertile soil, but tolerates poor soils and drought.Position: Full sun or partial shadeFlowering period/colour: May to June/Rosy pink to purplish-redHardiness: HardyEventual height/spread: 2.5m/2.5mSpecial features: Rosy pink to purplish-red blooms in late spring and early summer.Robinia hispida is a truly fabulous small tree with delicate Wisteria-like foliage. Fragrant, drooping clusters of rose-pink, pea-shaped flowers appear in late spring and early summer which are followed by dark red-brown seed pods in the late summer. The stems are covered in tiny soft hairs, and the seed pods are also hairy, which gives the tree unique beauty when its delicate flowers and elegant leaves are contrasted with its more robust features. The original name of this tree was the hairy locust because of the fine purply-brown hairs that cover the tree.
