Escallonia Red Dream
Escallonia
Common Name: Escallonia Red Dream Latin Name: Escallonia ‘Red Dream’ Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil Position: Full sun Flowering period/colour: June-August/ Scarlet Hardiness: Fully hardy Eventual height/spread: 1m/ 1m Special features: A compact evergreen shrub with colourful flowers. The 'Red Dream' is a delightful evergreen that will add colour to your garden all year round. The glossy green leaves are ovate in shape and finely serrated at their edges; the leaves are held on deep purple stems and the stems and leaves contrast beautifully. Over summer tubular flowers appear and these are scarlet red-pink in colour, so they really catch your eye. This bushy, spreading plant is suitable for low hedging and it also works well in a mixed border. It can tolerate costal sites as its glossy foliage is salt tolerant. Plant it alongside another glossy evergreen for year-round interest: we particularly love how it looks alongside the golden tones of the Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n' Gold'.
