Abelia Magic Daydream
Abelia
Common Name: Abelia Magic Daydream Latin Name: Abelia x grandiflora 'Magic Daydream' Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil Position: Full sun Flowering period/colour: June to October/ White and pink Hardiness: Half hardy Eventual height/spread: 0.6m/0.9m Special features: Sweetly scented flowers that change from white to pink. The ‘Magic Daydream’ is a wonderful little shrub with so much to offer due to its ever-changing interest throughout the growing season. The leaves alone are a kaleidoscope of colours: their main colour is dark green and they have variegated cream margins, plus new leaves have a rosy blush, making this a wonderfully colourful plant based on the foliage alone. To add to this, from June to October an abundance of sweetly scented flowers appear and these start out white and mature to pink. The star-shaped flowers sit nestled amongst the glossy foliage and give off a delightful fragrance, making this a great choice for sensory planting. If you want to attract more bees and butterflies to your garden then this Abelia will do the trick. Eventually the 'Magic Daydream' will grow to have a compact, bushy habit, making it the perfect choice for planting in a pot on a sunny patio. If you want a planting partner then we love this alongside the golden green foliage of the Spiraea japonica 'Golden Princess'. Give this Abelia protection in winter if you are in a colder area.

Buddleja Petite Dark Pink
Butterfly Bush
Common Name: Butterfly Bush Latin Name: Buddleja 'Petite Dark Pink' Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil Position: Full sun Flowering period/colour: June - September/ Dark pink Hardiness: Fully hardy Eventual height/spread: 0.6m/0.7m Special features: Long-lasting, colourful, sweetly scented blossoms. The 'Petite Dark Pink' is a wonderfully compact Buddleja which will add a splash of colour to a sunny spot in the garden. Dark pink-purple flowers open from magenta buds in summer and last into autumn, giving long-lasting floral interest: the flowers are held in conical clusters on long stems which reach out above the foliage. Slender, pointed, dark-green leaves that are slightly serrated at the edge make the perfect foil for the flowers. The flowers are lightly scented, making this a great choice for sensory planting, and due to its dwarf form you can plant this buddleja in a large pot if you wish. We love planting it alongside another scented plant, like the Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Lacey Blue', but it will also work well when planted alongside another compact Buddleja.

Buddleja davidii Moonshine
Butterfly Bush
Common Name: Butterfly Bush Latin Name: Buddleja davidii ‘Moonshine’ Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil Position: Full sun Flowering period/colour: June - September/ Purple Hardiness: Fully hardy Eventual height/spread: 1.5m/0.9m Special features: Bright green foliage and long-lasting flowers. This Buddleja is different to most of its kind as it boasts bright lime green-yellow foliage, which really catches your eye, and is the perfect accent colour for planting next to other Buddlejas that have darker leaves. From June to September the leaves are accompanied by a profuse floral display of deep purple flowers that are held in conical clusters. The flowers carry a sweet scent, which makes them very attractive to bees and butterflies; this also makes the ‘Moonshine’ a great choice for a sensory garden. This shrub grows to have a fairly upright habit and it works well in a sunny bed or border. We love alternating it with the darker Buddleja davidii ‘Adonis Blue Adokeep’ as the accenting colours of the two plants work really well together.

With this variety being in the 'Buzz' series, you can get all the benefits of having a beautiful Buddleja in your garden without having to compromise planting space; a 'Buzz' Buddleja can be planted in a pot on a sunny patio. We love this in a pot on its own as a specimen, but you can also plant it in a sunny bed or border: it looks great alongside a contrasting ‘Buzz’ variety, like the Buddleja buzz 'Ivory', as the creamy flowers contrast perfectly with the vivid magenta tones of the ‘Hot Raspberry’.
