The blackberry bush has a reputation of being a wild grower - untameable for the garden; modern varieties however have allowed the late summer soft fruit to be grown and maintained fairly simply. Thorn-less varieties of the blackcurrant bush are also available. The blackberry bush flowers between May and July so frost protection is not necessary. Blackberries will grow in most soils, even those with reasonably inefficient drainage.
