At first glance, this looks like holly with its spiny edged leaves. These are marbled and mottled in an intriguing range of yellow and different shades of green. When young the leaves have bronze tints as well. It makes a dense, rather bell-shaped shrub that grows slowly. 'Goshiki' means: 'five colours'. It is a vigorous, bright, happy looking shrub. The inconspicuous flowers which come in autumn carry a sweet fragrance.
