Pittosporum tenuifolium Beach Ball
Pittosporum
Common Name: Beach Ball Pittosporum Latin Name: Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Beach Ball' Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil Position: Full sun or partial shade Hardiness: Frost hardy (needs winter protection) Eventual height/spread: 1m/1m Special features: Maintains its rounded habit with very little pruning.
The 'Beach Ball' is a neat, rounded evergreen shrub that is the perfect choice for adding colour and structure to your garden all year round. The glossy, mid-green leaves are uniformly elliptic in shape and are held on dark purple stems. The spherical shape makes this a wonderful structural feature and, unlike Buxus, it requires very little pruning to maintain its shape. This pittosporum works well as a hedging plant or you can plant it in a large pot.
This evergreen is low-maintenance, not only because of its minimal pruning, but also because it does not require much water once it is established. Make sure you give it some shelter in colder areas.
