Pears are one of the country's most popular fruits and can be eaten fresh from the tree or used in many culinary dishes. The fruits make a healthy, nutrient rich snack free from both fat and cholesterol making them ideal for lunch boxes. Pear trees are low maintenance and usually live for around 50 years but can live up to a century or more. Some pear trees are partially self fertile but to guarantee cross pollination plant in a sunny, open site with another tree from the same or adjacent flowering group. Pear trees will thrive in any fertile well drained soil.
