Parrotia is a genus that has one single species: the Parrotia Persica. This genus is from the tree family Hamamelidaceae and it was named after the German naturalist Freidrich Parrot. Various forms of the Parrotia Persica now exist, and some forms like the ‘Bella’ are prized for their narrower form. Parrotia trees are widely planted as specimen trees and parkland trees for their ornamental foliage. The leaves are broadly ovate in shape and have wavy margins and a strong purple-red colouring in the autumn; the leaves have a wonderful shine to them and they make the tree really stand out in autumn.
The bark of Parrotia trees is also highly ornamental as it peels and flakes off to reveal pale green, pink and yellow patches underneath the old bark - a lot like the popular Plane tree does. This genus also produces an abundant display of small red flowers before the leaves appear in winter, making it a great tree for year round interest.

Parrotia persica
Persian Ironwood Tree
Common Name: Persian IronwoodLatin Name: Parrotia persicaSoil: Any fertile, moist but well drained soilPosition: Full sun or partial shadeHardiness: Fully hardyFlowering period: Spring & WinterFlowering colour: RedEventual height/spread after 20 years: 8m/10mOne of the best features of the Parrotia persica is the unique grey flaking bark, which sheds more with age. It often has multiple stems which hold long, ovate green leaves. The leaves of this deciduous tree transform in stages throughout the autumn months; first vivid yellow, then burning orange, and finally to an intense red. In late winter, insignificant red flowers bring life to the stark branches, the flowers are followed in spring by the newly emerging leaves. The Persian ironwood tree has a wide spreading habit and is therefore suitable for a larger garden, particularly as a border tree. For the best autumn leaf colour, grow this tree in acid soil.

Parrotia Vanessa
Persian Ironwood Tree
Common Name: Persian Ironwood Latin Name: Parrotia persica Vanessa Soil: Any fertile, moist but well drained soil Position: Full sun or partial shade Hardiness: Fully hardy Flowering period: Winter Flowering colour: Dark red Height/spread after 20 years: 5m/3m The ‘Vanessa’ variety of Persian Ironwood is a fantastic choice for a medium sized garden and it adds great interest in both autumn and winter. The leaves are green in spring and summer, but they truly come to life in autumn when they turn to shades of plum purple, deep crimson, burnt orange and golden yellow. This tree adds further interest in winter, usually in January, when the dark red flowers appear on bare branches. The bark also adds year round interest as it gradually peels and flakes, which creates a pleasing mottled effect.
