This is a great choice for both its fruiting and ornamental value. In spring, the glossy green leaves appear and these are followed by pure white flowers in summer. The fruits are ready in late October – early November and, unlike some medlar varieties, these can be enjoyed fresh and don’t need to be left to ripen. Alternatively, the fruits can be cooked and used in jams or chutneys.

It features large, deeply lobed luscious green leaves which hold until autumn, the leaves are deciduous so fresh foliage will shoot out every spring. The purple fruits are edible and can be enjoyed fresh or can be made into a jam or a preserve; contrary to their name, they are not white and ‘alba’ refers to the leaf buds which are white. The morus alba is widely cultivated for food for silkworms, for the commercial production of silk, and it is also well-known scientifically for its rapid plant movement when releasing pollen (which is released at over half the speed of sound, 350mph). This lovely fruit tree is highly popular with wildlife, particularly with butterflies, and its 'raspberry-like' fruits will soon be snapped up by the birds if you don't pick them in time. Common Name: White Mulberry Latin Name: Morus alba 'Laciniata' Soil: Moist soils Position: Open sun Fruit picking time: July Fruit size/colour: Medium/ white-pink/ lilac. This mulberry is a real 'all-rounder' as it valued for both its fruits, its ornamental foliage and its structure. The mulberries are white, but sometimes with a pink-lilac blush; the fruits can be enjoyed fresh or they can be made into a jam or preserve. The deeply divided mid-dark green leaves are serrated at the edge, which adds ornamental interest, and they later turn to crisp shades of yellow before falling. In terms of structure, the 'laciniata' will eventually form a handsome upright-spreading tree with an eventual height of around 6m and an eventual spread of around 3m.

The 'Morus alba pendula' is a beautiful weeping tree that is perfect for producing fruit in a smaller space. This tree matures to produce a dome of weeping branches that go from the top of the tree (around 3.5m in height when mature) down to the ground. Masses of heart-shaped, glossy, serrated, bright-green leaves adorn the pendulous branches. Green spring catkins later become white-pink mulberry fruits. The fruits are perfectly edible and can be enjoyed fresh, or you can make them into a jam or preserve. Alternatively, you can leave the fruits on the tree for the birds to enjoy. Due to its weeping frame, this mulberry makes a fantastic structural tree and it should be planted in a sunny spot so that it can thrive.

This Chinese native features green pinnate leaves which are purple-red when young, and turn purple-red again in the winter. In summer, panicles of small white flowers appear; these develop into glossy red berries in autumn. This shrub works well when planted in a flower bed or as part of a border. Ensure that you plant this shrub in a fairly sunny, yet sheltered spot, as it needs protections from harsh winter conditions.

Nandina domestica Pygmaea

Common Name: Heavenly Bamboo Latin Name: Nandina domestica 'Pygmaea' Soil: Any moist but well drained Position: Full sun or light shade Hardiness: Half hardy - requires shelter  Flowering period colour: Summer/ White Eventual Height/Spread: 0.6m/0.5m Special feature: A colourful shrub that maintains a wonderfully compact form. The 'Pygmaea' is a shrub that certainly packs a visual punch: it features pinnate green leaves that are red when young, so you get two leaf colours on the same plant throughout the growing season. In summer you also get panicles of small, white flowers and these later become glossy red berries in autumn. The autumn leaf colour is also something to note, as the leaves turn to blistering shades of red. It is a more compact version of the popular 'Nandina domestica' and it is therefore suitable for a small space. Try it in a pot on a sunny patio. You will get the best leaf colour when this is planted in full sun, or very light shade.

Aside from the variegated leaves, summer also sees the arrival of sprays of small, white flowers, which are popular with insects. The 'Twilight' maintains an upright, bushy habit and is highly versatile, so it works well in a pot, or in a bed or border. Plant it alongside another colourful evergreen, like the Nandina domestica 'Obsession', for year-round vibrancy.

This grass is a wonderful clump-forming evergreen variety which has purple-black leaves. The ink-coloured leaves are strong and leathery; they develop a much darker colour in full sun and look fantastic when planted alongside a contrasting grass like 'Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'.  In summer, small violet coloured flowers appear which are later followed by glossy black berries. This perennial has a low, spreading habit and will eventually cover quite a bit of ground. This ornamental grass looks great in a raised bed or in a border.

This tree adds further interest in winter, usually in January, when the dark red flowers appear on bare branches.
