Common Name: Swamp Cypress
Latin Name: Taxodium distichum
Soil: Tolerates all soil types and thrives in waterlogged sites.
Position: Full sun/Partial shade
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Eventual height/spread: 20m/15m
Special features: Very large and attractive pyramidal tree with strong autumn leaf colour (Deciduous).
The 'Swamp Cypress' is an outstanding coniferous tree that is great for planting as part of a woodland or parkland planting scheme in a large garden. This tree features feathery light green foliage that matures over summer and turns to a bronzed yellow colour in autumn before falling. On mature trees, the bark will peel which adds winter interest when the leaves have fallen. If you have a large site that is frequently waterlogged, this is certainly the best choice for planting: in very swampy sites some of the roots will grow upwards to form 'knees' and this allows the roots to get some oxygen to the submerged parts of the tree. This tree will also happily thrive without any waterlogged conditions and so it is suitable for add larger sites.
