Latin Name: Polypodium vulgare

Special feature: A fantastic choice for evergreen ground cover
This is a really unusual fern, both due to its habit and its optimum growing conditions: the Polypodium vulgare is a low-growing, spreading fern and it prefers to be in dryer soil, rather than moist. If you want attractive, evergreen ground cover then this is a brilliant choice. The deep green fronds are divided into ladder-like pinnae and they are leathery to the touch. This is a British native and is a hardy plant that will add a verdant splash of colour all year round. Try planting it underneath a deciduous tree in a border, particularly if you are creating a woodland style garden.
