As its common name suggests, this is not your average fern; the ‘Osmunda regalis’ grows to be a real garden feature and it eventually has a rounded shape when mature. The fronds unfurl in spring to reveal their bright green colour and this holds until autumn when they turn to bronzed shades of red and brown before dying back for winter. This is a large variety of fern and it needs to be kept in damp soil in summer to stop it from drying out. This moisture-loving plant works well when planted near water; we love seeing its regal reflection by the side of a pond.
