This delightfully compact shrub is the perfect choice for adding a burst of colour to a small space in your garden. The ‘Soft Caress’ won the highly-esteemed ‘plant of the year’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013: quite the accolade! This is actually the first mahonia to have ‘spine free’ leaves, meaning it can be planted next to paths without the worry of causing harm. The leaves are long, slender and mid-green and they are accompanied by fragrant spikes of golden yellow flowers from August to October. The flowers later become small blue fruits and these are a firm favourite with the birds. A great choice for any garden.
