Common Name: Sweet Gum 'Stared'
Latin Name: Liquidambar styraciflua 'Stella'
Soil: Moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil.
Position: Full sun or light shade
Flowering period/colour: May to June/ Inconspicuous yellow flowers
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Eventual height and spread: 18m/12m
Special features: Bold wine red-purple leaves in autumn.
This liquidambar is a real showstopper, particularly in autumn when its deeply-cut, star-shaped leaves turn to a deep red-purple colour before falling. The glossy leaves are a solid green throughout spring and summer and the tree has an upright, broadly conical habit when mature. This makes a wonderful specimen for a large garden and if you have plenty of space then plant it with other liquidambars for contrasting shades of red in autumn; planting this alongside the 'Red Star' would be a particularly suitable choice as you would get varied foliage shapes and different shades of red.
