Echinacea pallida, commonly known as Pale Purple Coneflower, is a graceful and distinctive perennial that adds a touch of wild beauty to garden borders, prairies, and naturalistic planting schemes. Native to the central United States, this species is known for its slender, drooping petals that range from pale pink to light purple, surrounding a prominent, spiky, orange-brown central cone. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to midsummer, rise on tall, unbranched stems above a clump of lance-shaped, rough-textured green leaves, creating a striking and airy display.
Echinacea pallida typically grows to a height of 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) and spreads to about 30-45 cm (12-18 inches). It thrives in well-drained, sandy or loamy soils and prefers a position in full sun, although it can tolerate light shade. Hardy in the UK to RHS hardiness rating H5, this coneflower can withstand cold winters, down to around -15°C (-4°F), making it suitable for a variety of garden settings. Echinacea pallida is relatively low-maintenance, requiring little care once established, and is drought-tolerant, making it ideal for dry, sunny spots in the garden. It is also highly attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and its seed heads provide food for birds in autumn and winter. This species is an excellent choice for adding height, texture, and ecological value to perennial borders, wildflower meadows, and naturalistic gardens.
