Common Name: Barnes’ narrow male fern
Latin Name: Dryopteris filix-mas 'Barnesii'
Soil: Moist but well-drained
Position: Full shade or partial shade
Hardiness: Hardy
Eventual height/spread: 0.8m/0.4m
Special feature: Narrow mid-green fronds that are upright in habit
This is a fantastic choice for adding structure to your garden as the narrow fronds are upright in habit and are formed of pinnae that have slightly serrated edges; the ‘airy’ quality of the tiny pinnaes make this fern sway in the breeze, so it also adds texture. The mid-green fronds add a splash of colour throughout the growing season and if you want a planting partner then we love this alongside the colourful Doodia media; the two ferns have contrasting colour and fronds, but both have a light and airy quality about them. This is a British native and it was actually discovered in Cumbria in 1865 by J.M Barnes. (Deciduous)
