The 'Rode Zellernoot' is a tree that is highly valued for both its fruit and its ornamental display. The decorative leaves are large and finely serrated; they emerge wine-red and fade to a deep green colour. The main feature of this tree is of course the edible nuts; they are ready for harvest in late summer and are a really unique crimson-red colour. The nuts are partially encased in purple-red outer husks which only show the top of the nut itself. This tree has a further interest in late winter when its bare branches hold violet-red catkins. The 'Zellernoot' is a suckering tree and it can therefore produce new shoots from its roots which will create a bushier specimen.
