A picturesque, large tree and one of the best for exposed situations in just about any soil. It has coarse, lobed leaves which are coloured dark green. Fairly insignificant racemes of greenish yellow flowers are produced in late spring. Winged fruits, somewhat boomerang-shaped, follow in autumn and these spread far and wide producing copious seedlings. The bark is pinkish brown and the trunk is often swollen at its base.
