Quince trees have very high aesthetic qualities with their gnarled and contorted trunk and branches as well as their white or pink blossoms in June. Quince fruits make delicious jellies and jams when combined with apples and are themselves very aromatic. The Quince tree will grow to around 4m (12ft) high and prefers a moist soil. The Quince fruit should be picked in October before the frosts arrive.

Common Name: Champion Quince TreeLatin Name: Cydonia oblonga 'Champion'Soil: Deep, moist but well-drained soilPosition: Full sunFlowering period/colour: April to May/Large white flowersFruit picking time: OctoberFruit size/colour: Large/Greenish YellowPollination group: Self fertile Quince 'Champion' is a vigorous tree producing regular, heavy crops of fruit from a young age, even in wetter soils where some other varieties struggle. Large, single bowl-shaped flowers are produced in abundance in spring followed by greenish-yellow, pear shaped fruits which ripen slightly earlier than some of the other quinces. There are many different culinary uses for this for this quince, including cooking; when it is cooked the flesh turns a bluish-pink colour.
