Prunus - Flowering Cherry Trees

Flowering cherry trees are a highly varied and uniquely beautiful genus of trees, and they are renowned for producing the most delightful display of flowers in spring and summer. The flowers can be single, double, or semi-double and they also range in colour from vivid pink to pure white. The species is so diverse that it contains weeping trees like the 'Shidare Yoshino', compact trees like the Snow Showers', ornamental barked trees like the 'Tibetica' and large spreading trees like the 'Yedoensis'. Some varieties, like the Autumnalis Rosea, flower over winter which adds a very welcome burst of floral colour to a sleeping winter garden.

The Japanese flowering cherry trees are a large group within the genus of 'Prunus', and these have the Latinate name of 'Sakura'. The Japanese sub-species are in many respects as varied as the rest of the genus, but they are all bound by the collective trait of their large semi-double flowers.

Prunus Kiku-Shidare Zakura - Flowers

Prunus Kiku

Shidare Zakura

Prunus 'Kiku-Shidare Zakura' is a compact and highly attractive tree. The ‘Cheals Weeping’ is perfect for a small garden and it boasts a profuse display of double pink flowers. This is ideal for restricted spaces as it is one of the smallest flowering cherry trees available: you can even keep it in a large pot, if you don’t have the room to plant it. In spring, this outstanding tree bursts to life: new foliage shoots through and the leaves are a shimmering bronze colour. At the same time, the ‘Cheals Weeping’ puts on a stunning floral display. The spring flowers are rose-pink with a double petal formation and they cover the tree. In fact, the pendulous branches become difficult to see as they are often masked in a blanket of vivid flowers during this season. As the leaves mature, they turn deep green and hold their colour over summer. Come autumn, the tree produces an exuberantly colourful display of autumnal orange and bronze before the leaves fall. The structure of this tree gives winter interest as the pendulous branches gracefully arch downwards and they look beautiful when topped with snow. An ideal choice for year-round interest.  This flowering cherry tree is so wonderfully compact that it is suitable for planting in a range of situations: when planted in pairs, the Kiku Shidare Zakura’ looks great on either side of a path and it also makes a worthy lawn specimen. You can even plant this tree in a large pot and sit it on a sunny patio. With this being a small tree, it also makes a great gift. A best seller of ours, and for good reason, too. Prunus Kanzan - Flowers

Prunus Kanzan

Flowering Cherry Tree

Prunus 'Kanzan' is a truly beautiful flowering cherry tree, which offers an array of interest throughout the year. In spring, bronzed leaves emerge and the iridescent sheen of the leaves glimmers in the early spring sunshine. Alongside the bronzed leaves, crimson flower buds appear: as the flowers open, they reveal deep pink, double flowers. The flowers appear in abundance and hang from their long stalks pendulously. By summer, the leaves have matured to a rich green colour and they later turn to autumnal orange shades, before falling. The tree itself is vase-shaped when young, but it later matures to have a spreading habit. The 'Kanzan' is deservedly one of the most popular Japanese flowering cherry trees: its versatility and size allow it to be planted in a range of situations. Japanese cherry trees thrive in a sunny spot and they prefer moist, fertile and deep soil. Avoid shallow and chalky soil for the best results. You can plant the ‘Kanzan’ as an ornamental specimen and it works equally well as an avenue tree. This tree looks beautiful alongside the prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’, where the rich green leaves of the ‘Kanzan’ contrast beautifully with the deep purple leaves of the ‘Royal Burgundy’. The ‘Kanzan’ is a delightful tree, which will become a real feature of your garden. Prunus Snow Showers - Spring Flowers

Prunus Snow Showers

Weeping Cherry Tree

Common Name: Weeping Cherry TreeLatin Name: Prunus incise 'Snow Showers'Soil: Tolerates most soil typesPosition: Full sunFlowering period/colour: March /Pure WhiteHardiness: Fully hardyHeight/spread in 10 years: 2.5m/2mSpecial features: A small narrow weeping cherry which gives a cascade of pure white blossom. Prunus 'Snow Showers' is a compact weeping tree, which is perfect for restricted spaces. It boasts luscious green leaves, delicate white flower and a strong autumn colour. In spring, when the flowers arrive, the ‘Snow Showers’ is a sight to behold: the pendulous branches are awash with the most beautiful display of pure white flowers. The weeping branches cascade downwards and are covered in the single, pure-white flowers. The flowers are popular with the first of the spring bees and the flowers have a light and fresh scent. The spring leaves appear with the last of the flowers and the mid-green leaves are ovate and serrated. The leaves really come to life in autumn when they produce a final burst of colour: they turn to scorching shades of deep reds and oranges before falling. The weeping frame adds interest in winter and it looks particularly beautiful when topped with snow. This is a great choice for wreathing with lights during the Christmas period as the pendulous branches look wonderfully elegant when lit up. Maintaining a wonderfully compact habit, the 'Snow Showers' is the ideal choice for planting in a small space. Even when mature, this delightful tree has a compact form, making it suitable for planting in a large pot on a sunny patio. Equally, planting two 'Snow Showers' trees either side of a pathway makes a beautiful entrance to the garden. This versatile tree is well-suited to a range of situations and is certainly worthy of planting in any garden. If you want to plant this in a pair or a group, it works really well with Prunus 'Kiki Shidare Zakura' or Prunus 'Pendula Rubra' as the contrasting flowers from both of these trees looks stunning next to the white flowers of the ‘Snow Showers’.
