Pittosporum is a delightful genus of shrubs that are evergreen, meaning that they offer interest all year round. The leaves are thick, waxy and often lightly aromatic; some varieties are variegated and most have wavy margins. Pretty 5-petalled flowers appear in April-May and these add extra interest during spring.
These shrubs require fertile, moist but well-drained soil and they are perfect for planting as a low-maintenance hedge or screen.

Pittosporum Irene Paterson
Pittosporum
Common Name: Pittosporum Irene PatersonLatin Name: Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Irene Paterson'Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained soilPosition: Full sun or partial shadeFlowering period/colour: May to June/honey- scented, purple/black-red flowers (unreliable)Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection)Eventual height/spread: 2.2m x 1.8mSpecial features: Slow growing evergreen with prettily marbled leaves.A very attractive, rather subtle variety. The leaves are a shiny green and plentifully patterned with white marbling. This catches the light so the shrub appears to shimmer, looking rather ghostly on occasion. The new leaves are creamy white and the winter leaves have a pink tinge. It is very artificial in its appearance and good in an urban setting where its distinctive qualities suit abstract sculpture and gardens given over to hard landscaping.
