Photinia is a genus of over 40 species, and the genus is part of the Rosaceae family. The botanical name comes from the Greek word 'photeinos', meaning shiny, and this name is attributed to the glossy leaves. Photinias are native to Asia and India and they are now globally cultivated for their attractive ornamental properties. Most photinias are evergreen, and the highly popular 'Red Robin' is often planted as a screening tree as it provides the perfect balance of an attractive tree, matched with the practical capability of providing screening all year round.
As well as the highly attractive foliage, Photinias are also admired for their flowers and fruits. The flowers grow in flat corymbs, and these flowers later turn to berries, giving the genus its common name of ‘Christmas berry’. This is an outstanding genus which is deservedly popular.
