Hydrangea shrubs are widely planted for their lovely floral display of either mophead or lace-cap flowers. The flowers appear in abundance towards the end of summer and smother the shrub. One unusual trait of some hydrangeas is that the lacecap varieties can change colour depending on the soil conditions that they are planted in: the flowers tend to be blue in more acidic soils and pink in more alkaline conditions.
These deciduous shrubs are well-suited to being planted in a bed or a border and they enjoy a semi-shaded position.
