The 'Royal Purple' is a deservedly popular variety of cotinus and it has won the RHS Award of Garden Merit. The intensely coloured deep purple leaves are rounded in shape and cover the bush; come autumn, they burst to blistering shades of purple-red before falling. The flower plumes arrive in summer and are pink in colour and feathery in appearance. This shrub makes a great addition to a mixed border. Although it can tolerate partial shade, it will produce the best leaf colour in full sun.
