Cupressus sempervirens
Italian Cypress Tree
This elegant evergreen conifer grows to be tall with a slender form, making it an excellent choice for architectural planting. The dark-green, scale-like leaves are densely-packed on the upright branches and a neat, columnar shape is achieved when mature. Synonymous with the Tuscan landscape, the Cupressus sempervirens is a much-admired Mediterranean native, but its dignified silhouette makes it a feature of formal gardens all around the world. With that being said, it is fully hardy down to -20 and can tolerate both costal sites and urban pollution, so it is well-suited to most U.K. gardens. You can plant this as a specimen, but it looks particularly striking when lining a driveway or a path. With this being an evergreen it also makes an effective, yet attractive, screen when multiple trees are planted alongside each other.
