Acer Brilliantissimum

Acer 'Brilliantissimum' is a striking sycamore tree that is ideal for smaller gardens. Pink young foliage that matures to yellow, then green. Attractive rounded habit: a great specimen tree. The Acer 'Brilliantissimum' is a truly eye-catching tree that offers a beautiful array of foliage colour. The leaves open shrimp pink in spring and gradually mature to a bronzed yellow over spring. Spring also sees the arrival of small yellow-green flowers, which work well against the colourful foliage.  In summer, the leaves put on their penultimate colour show as they mature to a darker green, with yellow marbling. Late summer sees the arrival of pretty clusters of red, winged fruits. One of the biggest benefits of planting this tree is its ability to add a real splash of colour in early spring and then changing interest over summer. It grows to have a beautifully rounded crown that is densely packed with the vivid leaves. The symmetrical shape of this tree makes it a great specimen and its slow growth rate and compact eventual size make it perfect for smaller spaces. This tree will do well in a range of soil types, but you should avoid planting it in exposed sites in order to protect the foliage from strong winds. This versatile tree looks particularly eye-catching when planting alongside the equally colourful Acer 'Carnival': the variegated leaves of the carnival work well with the changing colours of the 'Brilliantissimum'. For a contrasting genus, try the Catalpa ‘Aurea’: the large and beautifully bright leaves of the Catalpa sit perfectly against the ‘Brilliantissimum’. Acer Prinz Handjery

New foliage starts as a shrimp pink colour and then it develops to a pink-bronze before turning green in summer. The undersides of the leaves are also of interest as these are purple, adding more colour to this wonderful tree. Adding to this, in summer long yellow flowers appear and these later become winged red fruits by autumn. The tree itself will grow to have a rounded habit and it makes a great ornamental specimen.

Amelanchier lamarckii

June Berry Tree

Amelanchier lamarkii, or June Berry tree, is a hardy garden tree which features snow-white flowers and bronzed leaves, with a good autumn colour. This graceful Amelanchier offers changing interest and it would be a welcome addition to any garden. In spring, young foliage shoots through and the leaves are a coppery red colour when young. The leaves are soon accompanied by a stunning shower of star-shaped flowers, which appear in abundance all over the tree. The flowers have five pure white petals and the protruding yellow stamens are the centerpiece of the pretty flowers. Come summer, the leaves mature to a deeper green colour and the purple-black berries appear in June. The clusters of glossy berries make a great natural bird feeder, but they are also edible for humans and they taste like blueberries. The berries can be enjoyed straight from the tree, or they can be cooked up as a jam. Autumn sees the final burst of colour from the foliage: the leaves put on a spectacular show of warm red and bronzed orange before falling. The 'lamarkii' is a hardy tree which makes an ideal lawn specimen: it grows to have a broadly vase-shaped habit and is relatively small when mature, making it suitable for a range of gardens. A deservedly popular tree that works well with a range of other trees: in particular, the Amelanchier Ballerina sits well against this tree as the two are remarkably similar, but the Ballerina has a slightly different habit as the branches arch over a little more. Cytisus battandieri

Pineapple Broom Tree

Cytisus battandieri, also known as the Pineapple Broom tree, is a semi-evergreen tree with highly scented yellow flowers. This tree makes a fantastic specimen and it is ideal for a sensory garden. The Pineapple Broom tree gets its unusual common name from the highly-fragranced flowers: they smell like cooked pineapple and carry the most deliciously sweet scent. The flowers are a truly eye-catching feature as they are a vivid golden yellow colour and they really stand out against the foil of the green foliage. The pea-like flowers are held in dense, upright clusters and they are present during June and July. If you want to attract wildlife to your garden, the scent of the flowers is somewhat irresistible to bees and you will find them buzzing around the flowers over summer. The summer flowers are accompanied by a mass of three-lobed silvery green-grey leaves, which can hold all year round in milder winters, making this a semi-evergreen tree. The leaves have the added attraction of a 'velvety' feel to them and they really set those summer flowers off beautifully. This Cytisus has an attractive open, spreading habit and makes an ideal lawn specimen. Equally, the 'Pineapple Broom Tree' is also a great choice for a sensory garden due to its wonderfully scented flowers. You could plant this tree on either side of a walkway or entrance to really benefit from the sweet fragrance of the flowers. Laburnocytisus Adamii

This is the perfect tree for a smaller garden, but you should be aware that all parts of this tree are toxic to humans and animals when ingested - this applies to the seed pods in particular.

Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii' is an ornamental tree with an attractive form and vibrant yellow flowers in early summer. The flowers are similar to those of Wisteria, hanging in great bunches like grapes. They are bright lemon yellow and are followed by long seed pods. The tree has an attractive, neat form and requires no pruning, so it is a great addition to a low maintenance garden. It is hardy, and can tolerate a wide range of soil types and situations. This is a relatively small tree so can be a handsome and low maintenance specimen tree in a small garden. This plant generally grows as a tree, but can also be pruned to form a hedge or to be trained over an arch. The seeds are attractive to children as the pods resemble pea pods. However, the seeds are highly poisonous (as are all other parts of the tree), so it is better not to plant Laburnum where young children will be playing unsupervised.

Photinia fraseri 'Red Robin' offers year round interest with its vivid red leaves. In spring it has further interest with clusters of white flowers. A fantastic screening tree, hedge or ornamental specimen. If you want unusual foliage, the 'Red Robin' is the perfect choice. The elliptic leaves are finely serrated at their margins and fresh foliage shoots through as a brilliant red colour. The leaves mature to a dark green, but as new foliage continues to emerge red you get a real contrast of colours over the spring period. Mid-spring also sees the arrival of clusters of pretty white flowers, which add further interest. Come autumn, the leaves mature to a bronzed green, which adds great interest over the winter months.   This is a deservedly popular variety and it is largely planted for its versatility. You can plant the 'Red Robin' at the back of a border or you can use it as a screening tree. It can cope with hard pruning, so, when several are planted in a row, you get an informal hedge. You can also clip the 'Red Robin' into a particular shape. In order to get the best leaf colour and the most flowers, ensure you plant this tree in a full sun position with some shelter. This flowering cherry tree is valued for its bell-shaped, semi-double white flowers which appear in bursts from late autumn through to early spring: the flowers appear on bare stems and look truly stunning in a winter garden. The flowers open from pink buds and some of the petals have a pink tint to them. The simple flowers are delicate and truly charming: they add a much-needed dose of floral beauty over the colder months. In spring, the leaves appear and are at first a bronzed green, later maturing to a rich, deeper green. By summer, the winter flowers have become small fruits, which are often enjoyed by the birds. This tree also boasts a good autumn leaf colour, with the ovate and sharply-toothed leaves turning to blistering shades of orange and russet red before falling. This is a hardy tree that is suitable for planting in a range of situations: it has an attractive, spreading habit and it works really well as an ornamental specimen. With a fairly small eventual height and spread, the 'Autumnalis' can be planted in a smaller garden. Prunus Autumnalis Rosea

Prunus 'Autumnalis Rosea' is a small deciduous tree that features pale-pink, semi-double flowers that appear in autumn and last over winter. This ornamental specimen also boasts ovate, dark-green leaves and glossy fruits in spring. This tree is a true delight and is worthy of planting in any garden: a tree that gives you year-round interest and that remains relatively small, making is perfect for a range of gardens. Each autumn, usually in November, a profusion of bell-shaped, pink, semi-double flowers appear all over the tree. The pale pink flowers open from dark pink buds and they add a real burst of colour as the dark nights draw in. It has small, soft pink single flowers in April. These come from red calyces and are red-eyed. The pinkish bronze leaves are unfurling at the same time, so the effect is a little fuzzy from a distance but, close up, are full of charming detail.
