Abies Koreana
Korean Fir
Common Name: Korean FirLatin Name: Abies ‘Koreana’Soil: Moist, well drained soil (will tolerate most soil types)Position: Full sun or partial shade (Avoid very exposed positions)Hardiness: HardyHeight in 10 years: 1.5m - 2mSpecial features: Produces unusual cylindrical purple cones, even when young The ‘Koreana’ is a highly valued conifer which is favoured for its unique cones that it produces in autumn. The cylindrical cones are purple-blue in colour and can appear on specimens that are as young as 3-4 years old. The needle-like leaves are bright green when young, and mature to a darker green colour over time; they have glistening silvery-white undersides and seen as the ‘Koreana’ is evergreen they will add interest to your garden all year round. This conifer is slow-growing and will eventually form a conical shaped tree that is densely packed with whorled branches. The ‘Koreana’ is well-suited to being planted in a large shrubbery, and works particularly well when planted alongside a glacous coloured conifer like the Chamaecyparis ‘Blue Nantais’.

This tree is a fantastic specimen tree for larger gardens as it will add an injection of lush green colour all year round. The 'Monkey Puzzle' is a dioecious tree and so the males produce oval-shaped flowers and the females produce spherical cones. Interestingly, the unusual common name was coined in the 19th century after a man suggested that the distinctive branches would even puzzle a monkey to climb!
