The ornamental bark can be fully appreciated in winter and it looks particularly wonderful when topped with snow. This birch is upright in habit and maintains its slender and elegant form as it matures. If you have a large space then try planting the Forest Blush in a row alongside a darker birch, like the Betula albo-sinensis, and alternating the two so that the bark colours contrast in winter.

Its bark is its most notable feature and this offers winter interest as the pearly white bark sparkles in the winter sun. Spring sees the arrival of the mid-dark, ovate, serrated green leaves and the yellow-brown catkins; the leaves hang from their stems and have a subtle shine to them. Come autumn, the foliage turns golden yellow before falling. This birch is fairly upright in habit and grows slower than some birch trees, making it a fantastic choice for smaller gardens or areas with limited space. As with most birch trees, it is tolerant of most conditions, but it does prefer moist soil. If you do have more room and want a planting partner for the 'Moonbeam' then the Betula  'Hakkoda Orange' is a fantastic choice as the two trees are relatively compact and both offer differing bark colours.

Deciduous. Betula utiis var. 'Jacquemontii' is one of the most striking trees available in the garden design palatte, and is especially useful for smaller spaces. It is a variety of birch tree with a fine form and very white bark that almost glows white. The most striking example can be seen at Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire where a stand of about 30 of the trees have been planted as a single feature. In this case the bark is especially white as it is cleaned regularly, for the most striking appearance possible. In addition to its fine bark, the tree boasts lovely autumn colour, with leaves turning golden before falling. Betula utiis var. 'Jacquemontii' is not a difficult tree to grow, preferring medium to wet soil, but also thriving in warmer, dryer climates. It is fully hardy in the UK and, like all birches, grows rapidly to early maturity. Birches are not long lived trees, compared, for example with the oak, but reach maturity very quickly, which is a great asset in the design of gardens which are intended for almost immediate appreciation. The final height of this variety is about 9m with a spread of 4m. Whilst stands of Betula Jacquemontii are particularly striking, this variety would be a fine statement tree in a smaller area or family garden, or even in a front garden that was large enough to accommodate the canopy width. The tree has separate male and female catkins, which both occur on the same tree.The plant is a native of the Himalayas where it was discovered by Joseph Hooker, and it was named after Victor Jacquemont; the French naturalist.

Betula Silver Shadow

The bark is a glistening creamy white colour and it looks particularly beautiful in winter; it gently peels each year to reveal another fresh layer underneath, thus retaining its sheen. Spring sees the arrival of both the foliage and the catkins: the leaves are ovate in shape, serrated at their margins and dark green in colour; the catkins are up to 15cm long and are brown. The leaves turn to crisp shades of yellow in autumn before falling. This tree grows to have a conical crown and it makes a great focal point in a garden due to its attractive bark. Birch trees look especially beautiful when planted in groups and choosing one with a contrasting bark colour always looks effective: we would recommend the ‘Betula albo-sinensis’ as the brown/red tones of the 'albo-sinensis' contrast beautifully with the sparkling white bark of the 'Silver Shadow'.

Betula utilis jacquemontii Long Trunk

Silver Birch

The bark is of great interest as it is sparkling white in colour and it looks particularly special in winter when the branches are topped with snow. In spring yellow-brown catkins appear and these are soon followed by the diamond-shaped leaves. The foliage is dark green in colour, deeply lobed and turns golden yellow in autumn. This is a weeping form of the ever-popular 'Jacquemontii' and it works really well as a lawn specimen. Alternatively, if you want a planting partner then alternating it with a darker weeping birch, like the Betula pendula 'Youngii'.

River Birch Tree

The rugged bark peels vigorously and you get papery strips of pink, cream and brown bark which looks particularly special in winter. In terms of the foliage this birch offers glossy green leaves throughout spring and summer and these later turn yellow before falling. This Betula works really well as a specimen, particularly due to the ornamental bark, but it also works well when planted in a trio. Although this birch is tolerant of most soil conditions, it grows particularly well in wet sites.

Betula nigra

River Birch Tree

Common Name: River Birch, Red Birch Latin Name: Betula nigra Soil: Medium moisture, well-drained. Acid, alkaline or neutral. Position: Full sun to part shade.  Flowering period/colour: Spring Hardiness: Fully hardy Eventual height/spread: 12m/8m Special features: Cinnamon coloured bark that peels and flakes to reveal creamy layers underneath. The ‘River birch’ is an American native: this fantastic tree is fully hardy and offers a changing interest throughout the seasons. In spring, green catkins appear and these mature to yellow and then brown. The fresh spring leaves emerge a rich green and hold their colour until autumn, when they turn yellow before falling. The leaves are of the classic betula ‘diamond shape’.  The bark is by far the most distinctive feature of this tree as it peels and flakes in layers: the outer layers are a reddish-cinnamon colour and the inner layers are creamy golden colour.

We love this when planted alongside a sparkling white birch, like the Betula utiis var. jacquemontii 'Silver Shadow'.

Crataegus Paul's Scarlet

Crataegus Paul's Scarlet, also known as the Midland Hawthorn Tree, is a fairly compact tree that offers beautiful deep pink flowers and luscious green foliage. Paul's Scarlet is a deservedly popular variety of hawthorn and, with its maximum height of around 6m, it's perfect for the smaller garden. In spring, masses of deep-pink double flowers stud the branches and add a real burst of colour to the tree. The flowers are beautifully complimented by an abundance of slightly glossy, dark-green, leaves that are deeply lobed: their dark green sheen makes the perfect foil for the vibrant flowers. Come autumn, the leaves turn to crisp sunset shades of yellow and orange before falling. This is a great tree for a colourful statement. This is a relatively small garden tree, with a maximum height of around 6m, often less, making it well-suited to fairly restricted sites. It has an elegant and upright habit, with light branches, slightly pendulous at their tips. This is a hardy tree that will tolerate a range of soil types, positions and conditions: it will even thrive in coastal gardens and with city pollution. This tough tree also requires very little maintenance; our only recommendation is that you remove any broken or crossing branches in late autumn. We would recommend planting this alongside the delightful Crataegus laevigata 'Plena' as the creamy white flowers of the ‘Plena’ contrast beautifully with the fluffy pink flowers of the Paul's Scarlet. Laburnocytisus Adamii

The Adamii is a delightfully compact Laburnum tree that boasts the most unusual flowering display. In spring, fragrant pea-like flowers appear on the tree and it is common to get both golden yellow and deep purple flowers on the tree at the same time. Sometimes, a mix of the two colours appears on the tree which results in a coppery pink coloured flower. This unusual trait comes from the two parents of this tree, one of which is a Laburnum (yellow flowers) and the other is a purple broom. The leaves are more Laburnum-like than that of a broom, so they are dark green and hold their colour in spring and summer. This is the perfect tree for a smaller garden, but you should be aware that all parts of this tree are toxic to humans and animals when ingested - this applies to the seed pods in particular.

Aside from the bark, the cordate leaves are mid-dark green in colour and are serrated at their edges. Come autumn, the leaves turn to a buttery yellow colour before falling. This Himalayan Birch has an upright habit and its graceful branches ascend to make a light and airy canopy. You could plant this alongside another more compact Birch, like the Betula ermanii, as the two trees will give year-round interest with their contrasting coloured bark. If you have a large space that needs colour and structure, an avenue of birch trees is a superb sight to behold.

Laburnum Vossii

Height and spread in 20 years: 4-8m/4-8m. Special features: Attractive yellow flowers which hang in clusters, like bunches of grapes. Light green circular leaves, which are particularly attractive when strong sunlight filters through them. Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii' is an ornamental tree with an attractive form and vibrant yellow flowers in early summer. The flowers are similar to those of Wisteria, hanging in great bunches like grapes. They are bright lemon yellow and are followed by long seed pods. The tree has an attractive, neat form and requires no pruning, so it is a great addition to a low maintenance garden. It is hardy, and can tolerate a wide range of soil types and situations. This is a relatively small tree so can be a handsome and low maintenance specimen tree in a small garden. This plant generally grows as a tree, but can also be pruned to form a hedge or to be trained over an arch. The seeds are attractive to children as the pods resemble pea pods. However, the seeds are highly poisonous (as are all other parts of the tree), so it is better not to plant Laburnum where young children will be playing unsupervised.

Acer Crimson King

The Acer Crimson King boasts deep red-purple, star-shaped leaves that have a great autumn colour. This is a fast-growing tree that is suitable for most soils, including clay. A fantastic ornamental tree. If you want a tree that will add a real splash of colour to your garden, the deservedly popular Acer Crimson King is for you. The leaves are large in size and crimson-purple in colour: they have five lobes and they curl in slightly at their edges. They are complimented by lemon yellow spring flowers, which look lovely against the bold colour of the leaves. The leaves hold their striking colour through spring and summer, before putting on a final show in autumn when they turn to crisp shades of red, orange and brown.
