Ornamental Trees

Ornamental trees are a wide-ranging and highly diverse collection of trees, and they are broadly defined as trees that do not have the primary purpose of bearing fruit. In fact, ornamental trees are so wide-ranging that the exact number of species is not known, but it is estimated that there are over 100,000 different species of non-fruiting trees.

In fact, there are so many different types of trees that the total number of trees collectively accounts for around a quarter of all plant species. It is thought that trees have existed on the earth for around 370 million years, and that over time they evolved to get their distinctively long trunk to compete for sunlight.

Trees have also been a pivotal factor in the survival of humans; not only from their ability to filter our air, but also for their other uses, like for burning for fire wood or for making hunting tools out of. For the average gardener today however, trees are often planted for much more aesthetic reasons.

Here, you'll find a wide selection of ornamental trees for sale.

Photinia Red Robin - Foliage

Photinia Red Robin

Red Robin Tree

Photinia fraseri 'Red Robin' offers year round interest with its vivid red leaves. In spring it has further interest with clusters of white flowers. A fantastic screening tree, hedge or ornamental specimen. If you want unusual foliage, the 'Red Robin' is the perfect choice. The elliptic leaves are finely serrated at their margins and fresh foliage shoots through as a brilliant red colour. The leaves mature to a dark green, but as new foliage continues to emerge red you get a real contrast of colours over the spring period. Mid-spring also sees the arrival of clusters of pretty white flowers, which add further interest. Come autumn, the leaves mature to a bronzed green, which adds great interest over the winter months.   This is a deservedly popular variety and it is largely planted for its versatility. You can plant the 'Red Robin' at the back of a border or you can use it as a screening tree. It can cope with hard pruning, so, when several are planted in a row, you get an informal hedge. Prunus Amanogawa - Flowers

Prunus Amanogawa

Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree

Prunus Amanogawa is a narrow and columnar Japanese cherry tree which is perfect for a garden with restricted space. It features dense clusters of fragrant pink flowers and eye-catching foliage. This is also a great choice for vivid autumn colour. The Amanogawa is a compact tree with a very upright habit and densely-packed branches, making it the perfect choice for the smaller garden. In spring, an abundance of deep pink semi-double flowers appear in clusters: the flowers are sweetly scented and smell of almonds, which makes this tree a delightful addition to a sensory garden. The spring flowers are accompanied by green-bronze leaves, and the leaves mature to a brighter green come summer. The leaves are ovate in shape and are serrated at the edge. A final burst of life comes in autumn when the foliage takes on a stunning array of autumnal colours: the leaves turn to shades of burnt orange, deep red and crisp yellow before falling. The upright shape of the Amanogawa makes it ideal for planting as a structural tree and it works well when planted alongside another upright tree like Sorbus Autumn Spire. The name 'Amanogawa' means 'River of the sky' in Japanese, and this Japanese native was originally found planted along the Arakawa River in Japan. This delightful tree was brought to the UK in the early 20th century, and it is now one of our most popular trees here at Mail Order Trees. Prunus 'Snow Showers' is a compact weeping tree, which is perfect for restricted spaces. It boasts luscious green leaves, delicate white flower and a strong autumn colour. In spring, when the flowers arrive, the ‘Snow Showers’ is a sight to behold: the pendulous branches are awash with the most beautiful display of pure white flowers. The weeping branches cascade downwards and are covered in the single, pure-white flowers. The flowers are popular with the first of the spring bees and the flowers have a light and fresh scent. The spring leaves appear with the last of the flowers and the mid-green leaves are ovate and serrated. The leaves really come to life in autumn when they produce a final burst of colour: they turn to scorching shades of deep reds and oranges before falling. The weeping frame adds interest in winter and it looks particularly beautiful when topped with snow. This is a great choice for wreathing with lights during the Christmas period as the pendulous branches look wonderfully elegant when lit up. Maintaining a wonderfully compact habit, the 'Snow Showers' is the ideal choice for planting in a small space. Even when mature, this delightful tree has a compact form, making it suitable for planting in a large pot on a sunny patio. Equally, planting two 'Snow Showers' trees either side of a pathway makes a beautiful entrance to the garden. This versatile tree is well-suited to a range of situations and is certainly worthy of planting in any garden. If you want to plant this in a pair or a group, it works really well with Prunus 'Kiki Shidare Zakura' or Prunus 'Pendula Rubra' as the contrasting flowers from both of these trees looks stunning next to the white flowers of the ‘Snow Showers’.

Magnolia Royal Star - Flower

Magnolia stellata Royal Star

Magnolia Tree

Common Name: Magnolia Royal StarLatin Name: Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star'Soil: Moist soil all year round, avoid very dry or very wet soil.Position: Full sun to part shade. Flowering period/colour: March/white (fragrant)Hardiness: Fully hardy in the severest European climates (to below -20°C).Height/spread in 10 years: 2.5m-4m/2.5m-4mSpecial features: RHS Award of Garden Merit. Pale pink buds open in early spring to fragrant white flowers with attractive, narrow strap-like tepals. Deciduous habit. This is an especially fine variety of Magnolia, deservedly carrying an RHS Award of Garden Merit. The compact habit makes it very suitable for smaller gardens. Magnolia 'Royal Star' rarely reaches 5m tall, and can be little wider than it is tall. The flowers are of particular note in this variety as they appear as large white star-burst shapes against the unclothed branches. They would show particularly well, planted against a dark evergreen background. Being a statement tree of the colder months, this variety would be best planted in a location that can be easily viewed from indoors, or in a front garden. The flowers of this tree are really very striking and so it would work particularly well if planted as the highlight or dominant feature of a small garden. This is perhaps the earliest flowering of the Magnolias, and so it location should be chosen with care in areas prone to hard frost. The early flowering, however, means that this tree can provide succession flowering if planted alongside apple and pear trees, as the time of blooming is likely to precede that of the fruit tree blossom.
