Ornamental grasses are a really versatile group of plants that can be planted for a range of uses. Some of the more delicate grasses can be planted in pots to soften the look of a patio, whereas some of the larger varieties can bring an exotic touch to borders. They come in a range of colours, with many having variegated leaves, and they are perfect for accent planting when you plant different coloured grasses alongside each other.

Carex Everest
Japanese Sedge
Common Name: Japanese Sedge Latin Name: Carex oshimensis 'Everest' Soil: Fertile moist, well-drained soil Position: Full sun or partial shade Hardiness: Hardy Eventual height/spread: 0.5m/0.5m Special features: Variegated dark green and white foliage. Everest is an outstanding evergreen perennial that will bring a variegated year-round dose of colour to your garden. The gracefully arching leaves are dark green in colour with a contrasting white margin, making this sedge a great focal point. This small and hardy Carex will form a neat mound and it works really well in a bed or border alongside other evergreen varieties: we would recommend planting this alongside something brighter, like the Carex 'Everillo', as the two plants make the perfect foil with their contrasting foliage. This sedge will also live happily in a pot and its arching leaves will reach over the edge of the pot, which is a great way to add structure to your garden; you could place the pots on either side of some garden steps or by an entrance to fully utilise the year-round colour.

This is a fantastic little sedge that is low-maintenance and perfect for a mixed bed or border. Its shape and size make it a great choice for architectural planting as it adds structure to the lower areas of a garden. We love this colourful sedge alongside something with a differing colour and texture, like the Carex 'Frosted Curls', but if you want a similar shape, but with different colours, then the Carex 'Everest' works really well.

The slender leaves are upright, but gently arch at the top: this sedge will add movement and texture to your garden with a light breeze. Although this is technically an evergreen, you can get the best out of the foliage by cutting away any dead leaves and the foliage will bounce back in spring looking even fresher. Spring also sees the addition of pale brown spikelets which sit nestled amongst the colourful leaves. This is a clump-forming Carex and it looks beautiful when planted alongside a darker sedge like the Carex comans 'Bronze'.

Carex oshimensis Eversheen
Japanese Sedge
Common Name: Japanese Sedge Latin Name: Carex oshimensis 'Eversheen' Soil: Fertile moist, well-drained soil Position: Full sun or partial shade Hardiness: Hardy Eventual height/spread: 0.3m/0.5m Special features: An evergreen which will add vibrancy to your garden all year round The 'Eversheen' is aptly named as its lustrous leaves have a healthy sheen to them all year round. This variegation adds year-round interest and the vibrancy of the leaves will brighten up any winter bed or border. The foliage forms a dense mound and looks perfect with other low, tufted perennials: we love the way the 'Eversheen' looks alongside the copper and dark green tones of the Carex Testacea, but it really will compliment so many different plants that you can place it anywhere. Its architectural form will bring shape and movement at ground level, or you can plant it in a pot as a specimen.

The long, slender leaves are mid-green in colour with variegated creamy yellow margins. Over time the leaves will form a spreading mound, making a neat and attractive plant. We recommend this one for adding structure and movement to a border, but it also works really well in a pot as its leaves will spill over the edge. Plant this alongside another colourful evergreen, like the Carex 'Everillo', for year-round colour.
