This Abelia is a wonderfully colourful semi-evergreen shrub that offers a kaleidoscope of colours for most of the year. The variegated foliage is at its brightest in spring when the leaves emerge with vivid shades of yellow and green. As the foliage matures throughout summer the colour deepens and darkens. Summer foliage is accompanied by fragrant, pale pink-white, tubular flowers that open from rosy pink buds and last until October. The final show of colour comes in autumn when the leaves have an orange-red sheen. In milder areas the leaves will hold, but for most this is a semi-evergreen shrub. We love this Abelia in a colourful border, particularly a sensory one, and it looks great alongside the much darker leaf colours of the Nandina deomsticata 'Obsession'.

The 'Radiance' is a delightful semi-evergreen shrub with so much to offer. Crimson-coloured stems hold ovate, mid-green leaves that have irregular creamy yellow margins, which makes this an eye-catching little plant. The leaves are accompanied by masses of white flowers that appear in late summer and last well into autumn when most other flowers have faded. The tubular flowers, which have pale pink calyces, are lightly scented and are popular with insects.  This Abelia will eventually form a mound and it works well in a large container, or in a mixed bed. We love this when planted as a low-level accent plant and it works really well with the rosy tones of the Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope'. 

Acacia dealbata

Mimosa Tree

Acacia dealbata provides a vibrant burst of sunshine during the winter months as its highly distinctive flowers appear in January. The flowers resemble small, fluffy spheres and they are golden yellow in colour; they are highly fragrant and their sweet scent can be a real treat for the senses over the winter months. In fact, the essence of the flowers, called ‘cassie’, is used in perfumes and fragrances around the world. Aside from human uses, bees and insects love the Mimosa flowers too, and it’s a valuable source of late winter fuel for the bees in particular. Aside from the floral interest, the foliage offers a healthy dose of year-round colour. The pinnate leaves are large with feathery leaflets: the foliage colour is a glaucous blue-green, but can sometimes be silvery green. The leaves make the perfect foil for the vibrant winter flowers. In terms of its habit, the Acacia dealbata will grow to have widely spaced branches and it will become a small-medium sized tree. This Australian native is half-hardy, so it will need some protection in exposed sites. An ideal situation would be to plant it in a sheltered spot against a south-facing wall for optimum protection. If you want a planting partner, we would recommend the Eucalyptus Gunnii as it also has glaucous blue foliage. Equally, the Cytisus Battandieri works really well due to its vivid floral summer display, as you get bright yellow flowers in winter from the Acacia and vibrant yellow flowers in summer from the Cytisus. Average growth in good conditions takes it to 6.4m height in the first ten years, finally maturing to 10m.

The 'Robin Hill' is a highly desirable tree that offers an array of interest throughout the seasons. In spring, just as the foliage is starting to shoot out, an abundance of star-shaped flowers emerge. The flowers emerge pink and soon turn pure white, with vivid yellow stamens at their heart. The spring foliage is coppery red and it makes the perfect backdrop for the floral display. By summer, the finely serrated, ovate leaves have matured to a luscious green and, in late June, the berries appear. The glossy summer berries are small, purple and hang in clusters all over the tree; they make a fantastic natural bird feeder, but they are also fit for human consumption, too.  A final show of colour comes in autumn, when the leaves turn to firey shades of orange and red before falling. This tree is well-suited to a range of positions, including as a lawn specimen or as a border tree. The dense and upright habit of the 'Robin Hill' makes it perfect for smaller spaces. It is a variety of birch tree with a fine form and very white bark that almost glows white. The most striking example can be seen at Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire where a stand of about 30 of the trees have been planted as a single feature. In this case the bark is especially white as it is cleaned regularly, for the most striking appearance possible. In addition to its fine bark, the tree boasts lovely autumn colour, with leaves turning golden before falling. Betula utiis var. 'Jacquemontii' is not a difficult tree to grow, preferring medium to wet soil, but also thriving in warmer, dryer climates. It is fully hardy in the UK and, like all birches, grows rapidly to early maturity. Birches are not long lived trees, compared, for example with the oak, but reach maturity very quickly, which is a great asset in the design of gardens which are intended for almost immediate appreciation. The final height of this variety is about 9m with a spread of 4m. Whilst stands of Betula Jacquemontii are particularly striking, this variety would be a fine statement tree in a smaller area or family garden, or even in a front garden that was large enough to accommodate the canopy width. The tree has separate male and female catkins, which both occur on the same tree.The plant is a native of the Himalayas where it was discovered by Joseph Hooker, and it was named after Victor Jacquemont; the French naturalist.

The leaves are of the classic betula ‘diamond shape’.  The bark is by far the most distinctive feature of this tree as it peels and flakes in layers: the outer layers are a reddish-cinnamon colour and the inner layers are creamy golden colour.
