Crataegus Paul's Scarlet - Flowers

Crataegus Paul's Scarlet

Midland Hawthorn Tree

Crataegus Paul's Scarlet, also known as the Midland Hawthorn Tree, is a fairly compact tree that offers beautiful deep pink flowers and luscious green foliage. Paul's Scarlet is a deservedly popular variety of hawthorn and, with its maximum height of around 6m, it's perfect for the smaller garden. In spring, masses of deep-pink double flowers stud the branches and add a real burst of colour to the tree. The flowers are beautifully complimented by an abundance of slightly glossy, dark-green, leaves that are deeply lobed: their dark green sheen makes the perfect foil for the vibrant flowers. Come autumn, the leaves turn to crisp sunset shades of yellow and orange before falling. This is a great tree for a colourful statement. This is a relatively small garden tree, with a maximum height of around 6m, often less, making it well-suited to fairly restricted sites. It has an elegant and upright habit, with light branches, slightly pendulous at their tips. This is a hardy tree that will tolerate a range of soil types, positions and conditions: it will even thrive in coastal gardens and with city pollution. This tough tree also requires very little maintenance; our only recommendation is that you remove any broken or crossing branches in late autumn. We would recommend planting this alongside the delightful Crataegus laevigata 'Plena' as the creamy white flowers of the ‘Plena’ contrast beautifully with the fluffy pink flowers of the Paul's Scarlet. Viburnum Charles Lamont - Flowers and Buds

Viburnum x bodnantense Charles Lamont

Arrowwood Charles Lamont

Common Name: Arrowwood 'Charles Lamont'Latin Name: Viburnum × bodnantense 'Charles Lamont'Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained; acid, alkaline or neutral.Position: Full sun, part shade, full shade. Flowering period/colour: November to MarchHardiness: Fully hardyHeight and spread in 20 years: 1.5m-2.5m/1-1.5mmSpecial features: Attractive, fragrant, pink/white flowers from November to March. Deciduous. Viburnum x bodnantense 'Charles Lamont' is a large, low-maintenance shrub, with a really striking floral display, that lends sparkle to the winter garden. The plant produces a splash of pink/white flowers from November to March, which can light up a border. The flowers are like small clouds of pink/white trumpets, borne on bare stems. The backdrop provided by the structure of the stems makes the effect all the more striking. Viburnum requires little care, and tolerates a wide range of soils and situations, including full shade. It requires minimal pruning but can also be pruned hard back, which is a very convenient feature in a low-maintenance garden. Ideal pruning involves cutting back one in five shoots to ground level to ensure continuous regeneration of a healthy young branching structure and ready show of flowers.  This variety is deciduous, with the leaves opening with a bronze tint, maturing to dark green in summer. The fruits of this shrub can cause a mild stomach ache if ingested.

Viburnum x bodnantense Dawn

Viburnum

Common Name: ViburnumLatin Name: Viburnum x bodnantense 'Dawn'Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained; soils, acid, alkaline or neutral.Position: Full sun to part shade.Flowering period/colour: March/AprilHardiness: Fully hardyHeight and spread in 20 years: 3m/1.5mSpecial features: Attractive, fragrant, pink/white spring flowers, autumn colour in foliage.Viburnum x bodnantense 'Dawn' belongs to the Adoxaceae family, and was bred as a cross between V. farreri and V. grandiflorum at Bodnant Garden, Tal-y-Cafn, in north Wales. It is ideal for low maintenance gardens, and is best sited in flower beds and herbaceous borders. It requires only very occassional pruning to keep its shape tidy, and is generally maintenance-free. If required, the plant tolerates hard restorative pruning, and so is ideal for a garden that receives only occassional maintenance.Viburnam x bodnantense 'Dawn' is best grown in medium soils that are neither dry or wet. It flowers best in full sun, and in a protected area, as the blooms can be lost to an early frost. The plant is very flexible as to soil pH, growing happily in acid, alkaline and neutral soils. This shrub is at its most valuable in spring, when visual effect is of a large structure of upright branches, free of leaves, and covered in small clouds of pink/white blossom. This creates an attractive image when viewed at a distance from a house. The blooms are valued for their attractive scent and fine trumpet shape when viewed close-to.The leaves are also striking in summer, dark green with a slightly purple tint and a strong veined shape. The leaves take on an attractive autumn colour.
