The hybrid Magnolias were developed for their larger blooms and their later blooming time, which avoids spring frosts. Full Eclipse has slender upright (tulip) blooms, fuschia (red-purple) at the base, graduating to white at the tips. Flowers are 10cm to 20cm tall. The tree is a columnar, upright grower, expanding out to 5 to 8 metres in width. This variety is deciduous, dropping its leaves in winter. The flowers are scented, and attractive to bees and butterflies. This is a variety with a very traditional colour and form to the flowers. This is quite a small tree so would be suitable for a small garden.

The colour of the blooms in this variety is particularly stable, compared to some other burgundy forms. The leaves are small, and a rich dark green. This variety was bred by New Zealand breeder, Vance Hooper, over a period of 15 years using lines of Magnolia soulangeana and Magnolia liliiflora.

The leaves are mid-green with a glossy sheen and some leaves have a bronzed tint in late summer. This magnolia is a slow grower, so it’s perfect for smaller spaces.
