Sorbus aucuparia is a British native that boasts delightful spring flowers, luscious green leaves and a vivid autumnal show of colour from both foliage and fruit: this really is a tree with so much to offer. In spring, the luscious green foliage emerges and brings the tree to life: the leaves are made up of pinnate leaflets that are serrated at their edges and pointed at their tips. In late spring and early summer, clusters of delicate white flowers appear. The tiny, single, creamy-white flowers pop up all over the tree and are somewhat alluring to bees and insects as they radiate light and sweet scent. Autumn is by far the most exciting time for the delightful Aucuparia: it puts on a stunning show of colour before the leaves fall for winter. The feathery leaves turn to firey shades of deep red, burnt orange, which adds a real burst of colour to the garden as the dark nights draw in. At the same time, clusters of dazzling ruby-red berries adorn the branches and the juicy berries are irresistible to birds. The berries can disappear quickly, so if you want the fruit for rowan jelly, pick them as soon as they are ripe to avoid disappointment. Once mature, this Rowan forms a fairly open and somewhat broad-headed tree: it makes a great specimen but also works well in groups. The Aucuparia, which is widely found across Britain and parts of Europe, is a tree that is tolerant of a range of conditions. This native Rowan can thrive in a range of soil types, but it does require the soil to be moist yet well-drained. Plant this tree in a sunny spot in your garden to see it flourish. We would recommend planting it alongside the delightful Sorbus Eastern Promise as the rosy pink berries of the Eastern Promise sit beautifully against the glossy red berries of the Aucuparia.

Photinia Red Robin

Red Robin Tree

Photinia fraseri 'Red Robin' offers year round interest with its vivid red leaves. In spring it has further interest with clusters of white flowers. A fantastic screening tree, hedge or ornamental specimen. If you want unusual foliage, the 'Red Robin' is the perfect choice. The elliptic leaves are finely serrated at their margins and fresh foliage shoots through as a brilliant red colour. The leaves mature to a dark green, but as new foliage continues to emerge red you get a real contrast of colours over the spring period. Mid-spring also sees the arrival of clusters of pretty white flowers, which add further interest. Come autumn, the leaves mature to a bronzed green, which adds great interest over the winter months.   This is a deservedly popular variety and it is largely planted for its versatility. You can plant the 'Red Robin' at the back of a border or you can use it as a screening tree. It can cope with hard pruning, so, when several are planted in a row, you get an informal hedge. Salix Chrysocoma

The 'Chrysocoma' is a tree that is simply iconic: it is a prominent feature of the British landscape and its gracefully arching branches can be seen draping over rivers up and down the county. This tree features a mass of weeping golden-yellow branches, which form a wonderful dome shape and are covered in swathes of golden-green leaves. The leaves make the most delightful rustling sound when they get hit by a breeze. Yellow catkins appear in April and add further interest to this majestic tree. This highly ornamental tree is also of interest in winter when its rugged golden bark and weeping skeleton are unveiled as the leaves fall. This makes a great structural tree and is also works well as a screening tree. Amelanchier lamarckii

June Berry Tree

Amelanchier lamarkii, or June Berry tree, is a hardy garden tree which features snow-white flowers and bronzed leaves, with a good autumn colour. This graceful Amelanchier offers changing interest and it would be a welcome addition to any garden. In spring, young foliage shoots through and the leaves are a coppery red colour when young. The leaves are soon accompanied by a stunning shower of star-shaped flowers, which appear in abundance all over the tree. The flowers have five pure white petals and the protruding yellow stamens are the centerpiece of the pretty flowers. Come summer, the leaves mature to a deeper green colour and the purple-black berries appear in June. The clusters of glossy berries make a great natural bird feeder, but they are also edible for humans and they taste like blueberries. The berries can be enjoyed straight from the tree, or they can be cooked up as a jam. Cytisus battandieri

Pineapple Broom Tree

Cytisus battandieri, also known as the Pineapple Broom tree, is a semi-evergreen tree with highly scented yellow flowers. This tree makes a fantastic specimen and it is ideal for a sensory garden. The Pineapple Broom tree gets its unusual common name from the highly-fragranced flowers: they smell like cooked pineapple and carry the most deliciously sweet scent. The flowers are a truly eye-catching feature as they are a vivid golden yellow colour and they really stand out against the foil of the green foliage. The pea-like flowers are held in dense, upright clusters and they are present during June and July. If you want to attract wildlife to your garden, the scent of the flowers is somewhat irresistible to bees and you will find them buzzing around the flowers over summer. The summer flowers are accompanied by a mass of three-lobed silvery green-grey leaves, which can hold all year round in milder winters, making this a semi-evergreen tree. The leaves have the added attraction of a 'velvety' feel to them and they really set those summer flowers off beautifully. Crataegus Paul's Scarlet

Crataegus Paul's Scarlet, also known as the Midland Hawthorn Tree, is a fairly compact tree that offers beautiful deep pink flowers and luscious green foliage. Paul's Scarlet is a deservedly popular variety of hawthorn and, with its maximum height of around 6m, it's perfect for the smaller garden. In spring, masses of deep-pink double flowers stud the branches and add a real burst of colour to the tree. The flowers are beautifully complimented by an abundance of slightly glossy, dark-green, leaves that are deeply lobed: their dark green sheen makes the perfect foil for the vibrant flowers. Come autumn, the leaves turn to crisp sunset shades of yellow and orange before falling. This is a great tree for a colourful statement. This is a relatively small garden tree, with a maximum height of around 6m, often less, making it well-suited to fairly restricted sites. It has an elegant and upright habit, with light branches, slightly pendulous at their tips. This is a hardy tree that will tolerate a range of soil types, positions and conditions: it will even thrive in coastal gardens and with city pollution. This tough tree also requires very little maintenance; our only recommendation is that you remove any broken or crossing branches in late autumn. We would recommend planting this alongside the delightful Crataegus laevigata 'Plena' as the creamy white flowers of the ‘Plena’ contrast beautifully with the fluffy pink flowers of the Paul's Scarlet. Prunus serrula Tibetica

Birch Bark Cherry Tree

Prunus serrula 'Tibetica', or Birch Bark Cherry as it is commonly known, is a tree that is prized for its ornamental red-brown bark. This tree also boasts willow-like leaves and small, cherry-like fruits. This really is a fantastic tree for year-round interest, as the deep mahogany-coloured bark glistens throughout all seasons. The bark, which peels away in bands with age, makes a really attractive feature in winter as the deep coppery-brown colour stands out in a sleeping winter garden. This is, of course, a flowering cherry tree, so it does have a blossom is spring: the flowers are small, white in colour and are present in April. The bark is by far the most notable feature of this tree, so this is not the choice if you’re after a profusely flowering tree. The deep green leaves are willow-like and cover the tree in spring, summer, before turning yellow in autumn. Autumn also sees the arrival of the small, cherry-like fruits, which are a great natural bird feeder.   This handsome tree was the worthy winner of the RHS' Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 2002, but it was first introduced to the UK back in 1908 by Ernest Wilson. Wilson brought the Tibetan cherry tree over from China and it has been a popular choice since its arrival. This tree needs a sunny spot in the garden for it to really thrive. We would strongly recommend planting it alongside the stunning Betula ‘Snow Queen’, so that the glistening white bark of the ‘Snow Queen’ can contrast beautifully with the deep mahogany sheen of the ‘Tibetica’. This tree also works well when planted as a lawn specimen and, to really set it off in winter, you could add lights to the tree and enjoy the glossy bark being highlighted by the twinkle of the lights.
