Eucalyptus - Gum Trees

The majority of eucalyptus trees are native to Australia and there are over 700 species in the genus. The Australian varieties of eucalyptus are synonymous with Koala bears as the leaves are one of their main sources of food. The leaves of the eucalyptus contain oily glands and the oil is extracted for medicinal uses which include alleviating chest infections like bronchitis. This highly useful genus is also utilised in woodwork, particularly in Australia where it is used for fencing and furniture production.

The common name of 'Gum Tree' derives from the sap that leaks from damaged trees as the sap is thick and gummy. The majority of eucalyptus trees are evergreen and they can grow to be fairly tall in the right growing conditions. The leaves of this genus are generally lanceolate and they hang downwards obliquely to avoid over-exposure to sunlight. The peeling bark of eucalyptus trees is also highly desirable and some varieties shed their bark in strips, yet other shed it in flakes, and others shed it in small pieces. The foliage is often a glaucous blue-green colour which makes it a great choice for adding an unusual splash of colour to your garden all year round.
